I’m talking about really alone? I think weve probably all felt lonely, but what I’m asking is, ”Have you ever felt abandoned?” Like, all your senses hightened, your muscles tensed, endorphines raging, you-against-the-world kind of alone.
Here’s a quick story... there’s this place in the mountains of North Carolina called The Road to Nowhere. It’s terrifying. It’s an old tunnel that was built to connect two small mountain towns together but they never finished the project. It’s dark and echoey. Things live in it. Animals, maybe... Monsters, most certainly. But fear is its cheif resident. Because about halfway in the tunnel turns just enough that you can’t see either side. It’s almost paralyzing to be that alone. Especially when youre all alone with your fears. Was something gonna get me? Was some deranged serial killer lurking, waiting for some prey like me to venture in? When youre alone, you make up stories. You start to fabricate a world that isnt real. You forget about things and your body immediately shifts into survival mode.
Many of us live like this. Always afraid or anxious. We feel isolated and vulnerable.
When I say alone, what does that mean to you? How are you different when you’re alone, when you feel abandoned? If you’re willing, share an experience of when you’ve felt alone.
